The Media Pioneer awards celebrate innovation and entrepreneurial spirit in specialist media markets.  Shortlisted businesses for the 2012 awards are profiled here and their stories are also published by InPublishing magazine.  Shortlisted businesses in the 2011 and 2010 Media Pioneer Awards are also profiled in the Media Pioneers news section: a great source of inspiration and ideas.
Judging takes place in May, with winners announced and awards presented in the conference theatre at the show on 24 May 2012.

Nominations are still open for 2012, with shortlisted businesses being featured on the show website and InPublishing.   There is no entry fee and submitting an entry is simple.  The awards are open to any specialist publisher who has innovated in print, digital media or events and can prove positive results.  Contact carolyn@thespecialistmediashow.com  for more details on nominating your business.

Windpower Intelligence is a paid-for digital tracker service launched in September 2010. The tracker is an experimental new platform developed by Haymarket with Strategy Eye.  The aim was to create a high value information service that wove together journalism, data and analytical tools in an intuitive system delivering customised information and data.  In under a year this service has generated a six-figure sum in subscription revenues, earning a place on the 2012 Media Pioneers shortlist.

For specialist publishers, the app store is a great channel for highly targeted niche content.  Blaze publishing has earned a place on the 2012 Media Pioneers shortlist with its portfolio of iPad editions of shooting specials and bookazines.

Singletrack is an independent magazine and website for mountain biking enthusiasts.   Publisher Mark Alker has decided to relaunch the magazine in March 2012, with a significant investment in design and paper, somewhat against the trend in publishing businesses.   Here’s why he is doing it and a rather clever way he is leveraging the relationships he has with specialist retailers.  So far this approach has grown print subscriptions by 20%, earning Singletrack a place in the 2012 Media Pioneer Awards shortlist.

Agora Lifestyles is a UK subsidiary of US newsletter publisher Agora Inc.  They create consumer subscription newsletters covering simple tips on making money on the financial markets, betting systems and online home business opportunities.   Across all their newsletter publications they have 20,000 paid UK subscribers.

The mainstay of their subscriber acquisition programme is email marketing, but recently they have been having significant success with a simple video/audio alternative to classic long copy emails.

Eight years ago Boat International, a magazine for the world of superyachts had just two editions in France and Germany.  This has now been built into a global print, digital and events business, through a careful focus on developing excellent relationships with yacht owners; a well heeled, well travelled and highly elusive community.  With just 7500 yachts over 24m and 80,000 people globally in a position to buy them, the audience is rarefied, and behaves more like a b2b than a consumer media market.

World Music publisher and past Media Pioneer awards winner is at it again.  Songlines’ Kindle Fire edition went live just before Christmas: the first UK music magazine on the new tablet, according to pioneering publisher Paul Geoghegan.

Many b2b publishers are keen to use twitter to reach influencers in their industry, but are not sure how to go about building a following or how to convert it into business value.

Research provide newsletters, analysis and an online database for academics looking for research funding. A small independent publisher, founded by William Cullerne Bown, their resources were limited, but they have grown their twitter following three-fold in just over a year, and have joined the shortlist for the 2012 Media Pioneer Awards.

Ten years ago Foluke Akinlose, a journalist at ITN Online, started in her spare time an online magazine, PRECIOUS, for working women of colour, covering the workplace, entrepreneurship and lifestyle for intelligent women in their 30s.

Today this website reaches 80,000 users a month, with 10,000 receiving a monthly email newsletter, plus growing communities on Twitter and Facebook.   It features a wide range of columnists and profiles inspiring business women of colour, as well as fashion, beauty and lifestyle content.

PRECIOUS is the latest addition to the 2012 Media Pioneers Shortlist.

Total Telecom serves the worldwide telecoms sector, focussing on the business and marketing issues facing blue chip companies like BT or Verizon.   Since Terrapinn acquired the title from Emap they have transformed it from a print magazine to a global digital business with a series of targeted events, making them the latest on the 2012 Media Pioneer Awards shortlist.
