Last week, visitors to the Specialist Media Show had an unusual experience - they could attend free workshop presentations from innovative tech suppliers in the Planetarium at ThinkTank, Birmingham. As one visitor tweeted: "It's not every day you get to sit in a Planetarium for work!"
It was standing room only for the PageSuite show at 1pm, a 360 video presentation created specially for the Planetarium, showcasing a range of different strategic options for publishers: digital editions, HTML5, custom and templated apps, TV Apps and Live Apps. Chris Took, Sales Director, highlighted the advantages of each product and showed how HTML5 and apps can work for different publishers. With case studies from New York Daily News to OK! to Archant and BioIT world, the conclusion was that each publisher needs a tailored digital strategy. The show was repeated at 3pm for those that couldn't get in.
Earlier in the day, visitors had taken part in a debate on the merits of Replica vs Redesign for magazine apps from Colin Bennett, MD of Abannan, and had also picked up some best practice tips from the likes of Bonnier and Incisive from Richard West, Marketing Director of Magplus. For example, Popular Science found that 98% of its app buyers were new to the title.
And as a contrast to the focus on mobile and tablet publishing, Virtual Ivent ran a session on the potential for publishers of online, live and hybrid events.
